AI agents
Build AI agents with Content Script¶
Introduction¶
An AI agent is a Content Script that turns a model into an assistant for Content Server users. The script declares the agent with one hook, agentRequest, and installs the AMAgentController behaviour. The behaviour serves the chat backend and the headless calls of other scripts. Since 4.1.0.
The agent runtime owns the parts every agent needs: the tool loop, the chat event protocol, stopping, the poll endpoints, conversations, and attachments. The script only says which profile and model to use, what the instructions are, and which tools the model may call.
AMAgentController builds on the AMRestController behaviour. The agent actions are handled by AMAgentController; every other path goes to AMRestController, so the same script can also expose its own REST operations.
Application Builder
In Application Builder, an AI agent is a component of type ai-agent. See AI agents for the manifest, the chat UI, and the configuration parameters.
Bootstrap¶
An agent script defines agentRequest, optionally agentLimits and agentMessageField, and ends with the usual guarded behaviour bootstrap.
Example: Installing the behaviour¶
import com.answer.modules.behaviours.AMAgentController
import com.answer.modules.behaviours.BehaviourHelper
agentRequest = { turn ->
// Build and return [profile, request, tools, mcpProfiles, sideEffects]
}
if(!BehaviourHelper.hasBehaviour(this, "start")) {
BehaviourHelper.addBeahaviours(this, AMAgentController.getBehaviours())
}
return start()
start decides how the script was called:

Headless -->|"No"| Action{"Last path segment is an agent action?"}

Keep top-level code to declarations
Every poll runs the agent script again. Top-level code must stay declarations only. Put expensive work inside the hook or the tool executors.
The agentRequest hook¶
The hook is a closure that receives a turn and returns a Map. The runtime calls it once per model call, because the provider's previous-response chaining does not carry instructions, tools, or the output schema forward.
agentRequest = { turn ->
[profile: ..., request: ..., tools: [...], mcpProfiles: [...], sideEffects: [...]]
}
| Key | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| profile | Yes | The amcs.openai profile id |
| request | Yes | A builder from openai.newResponseRequestBuilder(profile) with only the model, the instructions, the output schema, and the options |
| tools | No | Function tools built with openai.newResponseFunctionBuilder(), each with an executor |
| mcpProfiles | No | amcs.mcp profile ids whose tools the agent may call |
| sideEffects | No | Names of the tools that change content. The runtime reports them on tool.started |
The runtime sets the input, the previous response, store(true), and the tools on the request.
Do not set input or tools on the request
Do not call input(...) or addFunctionTool(...) on the request builder. A request that carries function tools fails with tools_in_request. Pass tools through tools instead.
The runtime checks the returned Map on every call:
- the hook must be defined (
agent_request_missing); - the result must be a Map with a non-empty
profileand arequest(invalid_agent_request); - every tool needs a name (
invalid_tool), names must be unique acrosstoolsand the MCP tools (duplicate_tool_name), and every tool needs an executor (tool_without_executor).
The turn object¶
The hook receives a CSAgentTurn: one model call of the agent, with the turn's identity, the user input, and the files attached to the message and to the conversation. Since 4.1.0.
The turn is also a read-only Map of its properties, so a hook written as { Map turn -> ... } keeps working.
| Method | Description | Since |
|---|---|---|
| getIteration() | The number of the model call within the run, from 0. Returns int | 4.1.0 |
| getConversationId() | The conversation identifier; null in a headless call. Returns String | 4.1.0 |
| getRunId() | The run identifier; null in a headless call. Returns String | 4.1.0 |
| isHeadless() | True when another script called the agent with docman.runContentScript. Returns boolean |
4.1.0 |
| getUserInput() | The user's message. Returns String | 4.1.0 |
| getAttachments() | The files attached to this message. Returns a List of Map | 4.1.0 |
| getFiles() | Every file attached in this conversation, this message's included, with the same fields as attachments. In a headless call, the call's attachments plus the agentInput.files of earlier calls. Returns a List of Map |
4.1.0 |
| file(nodeId) | Opens a file of this conversation for a tool. nodeId is a long, the nodeId of an attached file. Returns a CSDocument |
4.1.0 |
In Groovy, read the properties as turn.iteration, turn.conversationId, turn.runId, turn.headless, turn.userInput, turn.attachments, and turn.files.
File records¶
Each entry of attachments and files is a Map read from the file's last version:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| nodeId | The node id, as a long |
| name | The file name |
| mimeType | The MIME type |
| size | The size in bytes |
| uploaded | True for a file uploaded to the chat |
| embedded | True when the file's content was sent to the model |
A file is embedded when agentLimits.embedTypes allows its type and its size is at most maxAttachmentBytes. Any other file is metadata-only: the model sees it in the file list, and a tool can open it. Each turn tells the model the nodeId of every file of the conversation, including the files attached on earlier turns.
Opening an attached file¶
turn.file(nodeId) opens only files listed in files, so a tool that uses it cannot be led to read other documents. Content Server permissions still apply.
| Error code | Raised when |
|---|---|
| file_not_attached | The node is not a file of this conversation |
| file_gone | The file was deleted or is no longer a document |
When a tool fails, its output to the model keeps the code, for example Tool list_revisions failed (file_not_attached): ....
flowchart TD
Call["turn.file(nodeId)"] --> Listed{"nodeId in turn.files?"}
Listed -->|"No"| NotAttached["Error file_not_attached"]
Listed -->|"Yes"| Doc{"Still a document?"}
Doc -->|"No"| Gone["Error file_gone"]
Doc -->|"Yes"| Open["CSDocument, under Content Server permissions"]
An opt-in allowlist
turn.file protects the tools written to use it, which matters most for a headless run under a privileged user. A tool that looks up a node the user names by id keeps using docman, under Content Server permissions.
Example: Reading an attached Word document¶
// Inside a tool executor
def doc = docx.loadWordDoc(turn.file(nodeId))
def revisions = doc.listRevisions()
def anchors = doc.listCommentAnchors()
Optional script variables¶
agentLimits¶
agentLimits is a Map. A key that is missing, not a number, or not positive keeps its default.
| Key | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| maxIterations | 20 | Maximum number of model calls in one run. Beyond it the run fails with limit_iterations |
| maxRunSeconds | 240 | Maximum length of a run, in seconds. Beyond it the run fails with limit_run_seconds |
| maxAttachments | 4 | Maximum number of attachments sent with one message. Beyond it the message fails with too_many_attachments |
| maxAttachmentBytes | 10 MB (10,485,760 bytes) | Maximum size of an embedded file. A larger file is attached as metadata-only |
| embedTypes | All types | List of MIME patterns of the files sent to the model, such as application/pdf or image/* |
Uploads
chat_attach refuses an upload larger than the default maxAttachmentBytes with attachment_too_large.
agentMessageField¶
When the request uses an output schema, the answer is a JSON object. agentMessageField names the field shown to the user. The default is message. The whole object is returned as the structured output.
Example: Limits and a structured answer¶
agentLimits = [maxIterations: 8, maxRunSeconds: 120, embedTypes: ["application/pdf", "text/*"]]
agentMessageField = "answer"
URL contract¶
The agent's base endpoint is /otcs/cs/runcs/<agentNodeId>, and each action is <base>/<action>. The last path segment selects the action. Every action answers JSON. Failures are reported in the answer as ok: false with an error code, never thrown.
| Action | Parameters | Answer | Since |
|---|---|---|---|
| chat | conversationId, runId, message, attachments (node ids), snippets (strings) | ok, runId, and the final status. Clients read the outcome from chat_poll, not from this answer |
4.1.0 |
| chat_poll | runId, next (0 for the first poll) | protocol, events, next, end. known is false while the run has not started |
4.1.0 |
| chat_stop | runId | ok. The run stops at its next check: inside the model stream, before a tool call, or between model calls |
4.1.0 |
| chat_attach | conversationId, fileUpload (file name in fileUpload_filename) | ok, nodeId, name, size |
4.1.0 |
| chat_detach | conversationId, nodeId | ok. Nodes outside the conversation's folder are never deleted |
4.1.0 |
| chat_new | conversationId | ok. Deletes the session and its uploaded files |
4.1.0 |
| chat_session | conversationId | ok and state: active (with messages and activeRunId) or expired |
4.1.0 |
The client generates conversationId and runId. Each must be 8 to 64 letters, digits, -, or _. A runId that is already in use is refused, so generate a new one for each message.
chat_attach stores the upload in the conversation's folder under "Agent attachments" in the user's Personal Workspace.
Your own actions
Any other path is routed by AMRestController. Define a closure for it in the agent script, as in a behaviour based REST service.
Poll events¶
chat_poll answers protocol 1. Polling the same next twice returns the same events, so a lost response, a second tab, or a reload is safe. Keep polling until end is true.
| Event | Content |
|---|---|
| text.delta | A piece of the streamed answer |
| reasoning.summary | summary of the model's reasoning |
| tool.started | name, callId, and sideEffects (true for a tool listed in sideEffects) |
| tool.finished | name, callId, ok |
| output.final | The final answer, with html rendered from its Markdown |
| error | code and message |
| stopped | The run was stopped |
| busy | reason (user or node) and message |
| expired | The conversation has expired |

Concurrency
Each user has at most one active run, and each Content Server node runs a limited number of chat runs at the same time. A refused run reports a busy event. See AI agents for the configuration parameters.
Headless invocation¶
Another script runs the agent synchronously with docman.runContentScript. The agentInput variable tells start that the call is headless.
| agentInput key | Description |
|---|---|
| message | The user message (required) |
| snippets | List of String |
| attachments | List of node ids |
| files | The files of an earlier call's result, to work on them again |
| previousResponseId | The responseId of an earlier call, to continue it |
The result is a Map:
| Key | Description |
|---|---|
| ok | True when the status is completed |
| status | completed or error |
| text | The answer shown to the user (the agentMessageField of a structured answer) |
| output | The parsed structured answer |
| toolCalls | One Map per tool call, with name, arguments, output, ok, and sideEffects |
| usage | The token use |
| responseId | The last response id |
| error | code and message when the run failed |
| files | Every file of the call, to pass back as agentInput.files |
No request objects
In a headless call, params, gui, and response are not bound. Do not use them in the hook or the executors; test turn.headless when the behaviour must differ.
Example: Calling an agent from another script¶
def first = docman.runContentScript(agentId, [agentInput: [message: "Summarize the tracked changes", attachments: [contractId]]])
if(first.ok) {
def next = docman.runContentScript(agentId, [agentInput: [
message : "List the comments too",
files : first.files,
previousResponseId: first.responseId
]])
out << next.text
}
Identity
A chat run uses the signed-in user. A headless run uses the identity of the calling script, so a workflow step may run tools as a privileged agent user.
Tools¶
Function tools¶
Build each tool with openai.newResponseFunctionBuilder() and give it an executor. The executor receives the call's arguments as a JSON String and returns the result. The runtime runs every tool call on the Content Server request thread, so an executor can use the Content Script API.
MCP tools¶
List amcs.mcp profile ids in mcpProfiles. The runtime adds the tools of each profile to the function tools, and runs them the same way. Tool names must stay unique across both lists. See MCP server definition.
Side effects¶
List in sideEffects the name of every tool that changes content. The runtime marks the tool's tool.started event and its entry in toolCalls with sideEffects: true, so a client can show the user what the agent changed.
Prompt injection
Attached documents and snippets can carry instructions. Declare every tool that changes content in sideEffects, open attached files with turn.file, and tell the model to treat document content as data. The HTML of output.final has raw HTML escaped, images removed, and rel="noopener noreferrer" on links, so a manipulated answer cannot leak data through URLs the browser fetches on its own.
Example: A complete agent¶
This agent looks up nodes by id and reads the tracked changes and comments of Word files attached to the conversation. Set AGENT_PROFILE to an active amcs.openai profile, and STRUCTURED to true to get a JSON answer whose message field is shown to the user.
Example: Sample agent¶
import com.answer.modules.behaviours.AMAgentController
import com.answer.modules.behaviours.BehaviourHelper
AGENT_PROFILE = "default"
STRUCTURED = false
// Top-level code must stay declarations only: polls run this script too.

def args = new groovy.json.JsonSlurperClassic().parseText(arguments)
def node = docman.getNodeFast(args.nodeId as Long)
return [id: node.ID, name: node.name, subtype: node.subtype, size: node.hasProperty("size") ? node.size : null]
}
.build()

return start()
To chat with it, POST to <base>/chat with conversationId, runId, and message (and optionally attachments and snippets), then poll <base>/chat_poll?runId=...&next=... until end is true. To call it from a script, use docman.runContentScript(<node id>, [agentInput: [message: "...", attachments: [<node id>]]]).
The agent runtime¶
AMAgentController serves each action through the agent runtime, a CSAgentRuntime that openai.newAgentRuntime() returns, bound to the current user. Agent scripts do not call it directly. Every method answers the Map that becomes the JSON answer of its action.
| Method | Description | Since |
|---|---|---|
| openai.newAgentRuntime() | Returns the runtime that executes AI agents defined by Content Scripts | 4.1.0 |
| startChat(request, agentRequest, options) | Runs one chat turn on the request thread, writing the events that chat_poll serves |
4.1.0 |
| poll(runId, next) | Answers the events of a run from position next |
4.1.0 |
| stop(runId) | Asks a running agent to stop | 4.1.0 |
| attach(conversationId, filePath, fileName) | Stores an uploaded file in the conversation's folder | 4.1.0 |
| detach(conversationId, nodeId) | Deletes a file uploaded to the conversation | 4.1.0 |
| newChat(conversationId) | Ends a conversation: deletes its session and its uploaded files | 4.1.0 |
| session(conversationId) | Answers the stored conversation, so that a reloaded page can show it and resume a running answer | 4.1.0 |
| runHeadless(input, agentRequest, options) | Runs the agent synchronously for another script, without events | 4.1.0 |
Troubleshooting¶
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| agent_request_missing | The script does not define agentRequest |
Define the hook before the bootstrap |
| invalid_agent_request | The hook did not return a Map with profile and request |
Return both keys |
| tools_in_request | The request builder carries function tools | Pass tools through tools, not with addFunctionTool |
| invalid_tool | A tool has no name | Name every tool |
| duplicate_tool_name | Two tools, function or MCP, share a name | Rename one tool, or drop one MCP profile |
| tool_without_executor | A tool has no executor | Add an executor to the tool |
| empty_message | The message is empty | Send a message, or agentInput.message in a headless call |
| invalid_request | conversationId or runId is not 8 to 64 letters, digits, -, or _ |
Generate valid ids |
| run_id_in_use | The runId was already used |
Generate a new runId for each message |
| forbidden | The conversation belongs to another user | Start a new conversation |
| busy | Another answer is running for the user, or the node runs too many agents | Wait for the run to end, then retry |
| expired | The conversation session has expired | Start a new chat |
| too_many_attachments | The message has more than maxAttachments attachments |
Send fewer files, or raise maxAttachments |
| too_many_conversation_files | The conversation already holds its maximum number of files | Start a new chat |
| attachment_too_large | The uploaded file is larger than the upload limit | Upload a smaller file, or attach a Content Server node instead |
| unsupported_attachment | An attached node is not a document | Attach documents only |
| file_not_attached | A tool asked turn.file for a node that is not a file of the conversation |
Attach the file, or look up the node with docman |
| file_gone | The attached file was deleted or is no longer a document | Attach the file again |
| limit_iterations | The agent made more model calls than maxIterations |
Raise maxIterations, or simplify the instructions and tools |
| limit_run_seconds | The run took longer than maxRunSeconds |
Raise maxRunSeconds, or make the tools faster |
| provider_error | The model provider answered with an error | Check the profile and the model |
| agent_failed | An unexpected error stopped the run | Check the Content Server log |
| cache_unavailable | The cache service is not available | Agent chats need the cache service |
